Ubuntu is definitely becoming the most widely used Linux desktop, also helping to get more people interested in Linux and actually running Linux. Some Linux users who consider themselves die hard and leet will say ubuntu is a noob distro and is gay and all that. But that is not the case. Ubuntu does well for experienced and new users alike. I am no noob and I always go back to ubuntu, it’s not like I havent tried other desktop distros because I have. I like ubuntu because its fairly stable, its not slow, there is tons of packages, and apt is by far the best package manager. So if it means I’m a noob because I don’t have the time or patience to compile everything, update config files manually, and fix crap all the time then I guess I’m a noob. I simply do not have the time for some of these “leet” distros, I use Linux 24/7 on my desktop and Ive tried em all but always end up going back to my xubuntu.
I have seen in quite a few articles and reviews that ubuntu will overtake red hat but it is highly doubtful, it may give redhat a run for its money in the workstation and desktop market but not servers or enterprise implements. Anyone who has ever tried ubuntu or debian on a server compared to rhel/centos knows there is no comparison. i don’t think it will hurt redhat at all, If it did it would be bad for a lot of people especially the ones who use centos because with no RHEL there is no centos unless they got a development team and made their own enterprise packages.
Also ubuntu team and people are saying that one day ubuntu will overtake windows, I don’t really think so, maybe if more applications and games were compatible it might but I think that any Linux distro is still far from being a mainstream OS, Unless they can all of a sudden come up with something that is user friendly for idiots and housewives I don’t see it even coming close to competing with windows. But I think it is pretty safe to say there is a lot of windows refugees coming over to ubuntu and other Linux distros.
I know I first came over to ubuntu when one day I was reformatting windows after another virus infection I don’t have a clue where it came from. I noticed the first thing I had to do when the OS was installed was download and install 100s of updates, get an antivirus, spyware program, and firewall. And even then I was not 100% safe. I think there is a problem with the entire design of a system when you have to install and run so much crap to keep it from being exploited somehow. The entire setup of windows is flawed, from running admin default and allowing malicious programs to run, alter system files, and make it where you cant remove it is simply ridiculous.
Anyone who uses windows and has tried to clean the system after an infection knows that about the only thing you can do is reformat, its nearly unrepairable.
So one day maybe Linux will be more mainstream, I am still glad to see Mac giving windows a run for their money. Less windows pcs on the net means less botnets, less spam, and other annoying crap. People will say its because windows is more widely used its more targeted which is pure bullcrap, anyone who would say such a thing is an idiot. The design of unix type systems is much more secure and in no case can something execute on your pc without your knowledge and write to system folders without your express permission, it just doesn’t happen.
I applaud all those who have switched from windows to Linux or mac, just keep on spreading the gospel and hopefully we will get all these crap pcs off the net, and only then will annoying and malicious crap like botnets and spam decline.
And that’s my 2 cents
